More about What I Do

I came to Silicon Valley in 1992 and I’ve worked at SGI, SUN, Oracle, NTT, Brio, Acxiom, Cisco, and over 25 startups. I’ve built more than 350 websites. I co-founded three Silicon Valley startups (two with successful exits).

At Dialpad, I was employee #12, where I was the head of marketing and webmaster. It was the first VOIP service (before Skype). We grew from zero to 16 million users in one year, which was the fastest-growing company in history at the time. We were in the list of the world’s 50 largest websites.

I was also National Chair of the NWU Tech Writers Trade Division from 1994 to 2004. I worked with technical writers, journalists, techpub managers, recruiters, and so on. I wrote part of the overtime law in California.

In 2005, three of us co-founded a startup, raised $500,000, and grew it to +175 staff employees.

In 2008, I co-founded The CCG Group with Stephanie Cota.

From 2005 to 2018, I managed MIT's $1,000,000 Google Foundation Grant for the OpenCourseWare Project. Traffic from 52 visits per day to 17,500 visits per day and dropped from $0.70 cost-per-click to $0.07 to bring 4.1 million people by using 50,000 keywords in 14 languages. MIT placed me on their thank-you page between Google and the United Nations.

Harvard University Medical School’s Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) is the world’s #1 pediatric research hospital. I managed their $1m Google Foundation Grant. I added 150,000 keywords in 42 languages (all European languages plus Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and more). Within two weeks, I had 10% worldwide market share for pediatrics for only $300 per day.

I’ve spoken at conferences in New York City, Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, AdTech Shanghai, Mexico City (in Spanish), SES San Jose, BAM Chicago, Beijing, Vienna (in German), Paris, Aarhus Denmark (in Danish), Madrid, Cartagena (Colombia), and many other cities. I’ve also spoken several times at Stanford and UC Berkeley. I’ve presented in German, Danish, Spanish, and English (I speak four languages fluently and read several more). If you want me to speak at your conference, contact me.

I’ve been interviewed in newspapers, magazines, radio, and TV in Denmark, Germany, Brazil, China, Spain, Mexico, Finland, Ireland, Japan, the UK, France, Serbia, and other places.

I graduated from the Universität Heidelberg. Founded A.D. 1386, it’s Germany’s leading university and one of the world’s top schools. I did the entrance exams, courses, tests, and my thesis in German and graduated Magister Artium Heidelberg.

I live in Palo Alto with my wife and cat.
