Andreas RamosKauai is the island furthest west in the Hawaiian chain. Tourism is somewhat underdeveloped, which is why we went there.

Kauai has Waimea Canyon, a spectacular canyon similar to the Grand Canyon; the McBryde/Allerton National Tropical Botanical Gardens; and Kalalau Valley, easily better than Yosemite. I've never heard of Waimea or Kalalau and there wasn't much information about these. Others who saw Kalalau also agreed it was better than Yosemite. There are no roads. The hiking trail is very strenuous and dangerous. The cliff walls are probably unclimbable. I can't find any web pages that talk about climbing these cliffs.

It's late September and kids are in school, so there were few tourists. At McBryde, we saw only one other couple.

June 12, 2012 at 5:22 pm
Lisa CarlsonIt's a wonderful place. Also, I believe there's a play being produced there...not sure of the dates (maybe I'm too late).
June 12, 2012 at 6:11 pm
Andreas RamosI've often heard about this place, but it took me twenty years to finally go there. There was hardly anyone; just a few families (on a very large island). We brought sandwiches, water, and snacks, along with our bikes (you can rent bicycles on the island).

At a bluff, we watched red-tail hawks circling in the air. One hawk began pouncing on another; he'd fly up high and then drop on the other, knocking him around. They'd recover and he did it again. Another hawk joined in and they took turns pouncing on each other. One hawk fell with outstretched feet, and the two hawks grabbed each other's feet and both fell, upside down, wings spread, spiraling down. After falling a hundred feet, they let go and went back to pouncing. We couldn't tell if they were fighting or playing. It certainly looked like playing.

It's odd that the island is semi-abandoned, but that's also my experience of nature in the Bay Area: although there are seven million people here, you can go only 15 minutes and be in a rural area; another 10 minutes and you're far away from people and cities.

Spectacular panorama views of the bay from angles that you've never seen. At various coves and beaches, there are deserted buildings from the Civil War, WWI, WWII, incl. a empty site for a Nike missile site from the Cold War.

October 31, 2011 at 3:53 am
Dave MundtI have thought, for years, that Americans should evolve over to riding a motorcycle for most of their local runs. It would save huge amounts of fuel, and, cut down on the congestion issues quite a bit. Also, of course, considering the insane driving techniques of most Americans it would provide a huge jump in the number of transplant organs available...

October 30, 2011 at 4:33 pm
Andreas RamosBeihai is a large beautiful park in Beijing. It's around a thousand years old and for 900 years, was an imperial park. It even has Kubla Khan's massive wine bowl carved from jade. The hill and lake are artificial. These were built by hand, long before there was power tools. On the grounds, there is also one of the last imperial restaurants, which still serves imperial dishes.

Mariianne CraryInteresting tourist guided tour, right there. Not sure what I will do when the first fake NEWALLst shows up, though.
October 8, 2011 at 5:41 pm
Howard DernehlThe Apple Store looked the most credible. For merchants and brands, do the locals care about whether the product or retailer is authentic? Would the Chinese consumers pay more for a real Nike shoe-- or always buy fakes for the lower price?
October 10, 2011 at 6:28 am
Andreas RamosLuxury brands cost (on average) 50% more in China. Wealthy Chinese fly to the USA or Europe for shopping trips.

Even with the high prices, China is the world's second largest consumer of luxury brands (they account for 25% of the global luxury market. Japan is #1). All the major luxury brands have stores and lots of billboards in China.

The ones who can afford it will pay more for the real thing. The copies are very good copies (for many items, I couldn't tell the difference) and the prices are half or less of the US price.

It's the same in the USA: many women buy the fake Gucci handbags and some buy the real thing. You can tell which one is fake: If they can't afford the real one, then it's fake.

Geeta KarmarkarI found your observations fascinating and often spot on. But thought I'd venture a few facts. "Lahk" for example is normally spelled as lakh in India. Also if you correctly imagine India as a conglomeration of countries with their own languages which are united under a common flag (sort of like the EU), you will realize that most Indians speak and read more than one language and read more than one character set. (In Europe people will SOMETIMES speak the language of the neighboring country but not often!) In Spain we found it difficult to communicate using English or French--actually I used Hindi most often as many 'workers' were from Pakistan! In Goa, Portuguese is spoken, and in Bombay along Colaba Causeway shopkeepers can and will haggle in French Italian or German. And yes, I couldn't agree more getting to and from India is a pain--takes me 2 weeks to recover!

Graceland - 17 photos
March 22, 2010 at 4:34 pm
Andreas RamosI was in Nashville a few years ago, visiting my mom. It was Sunday afternoon, and we thought, hey, let's go visit Graceland. Neither had ever been there. It's the 2nd or 3rd most-visited place in the USA.
March 22, 2010 at 4:36 pm
Andreas RamosOkay, here's my Elvis story. I grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee. We often saw Elvis, cruising around in his limo. It was him, because he was the only one who had a limo in the 60s and 70s in Tennessee. We'd wave and he'd wave. He was a really nice guy.

In 1978, a bunch of us went canoeing on the Mississippi. Nobody does this. It's dangerous. It's really dangerous. Don't do this. Whatever. We went. We canoed from Cairo to Memphis, because both are named after Egyptian cities.

We get to Memphis and walk around the city. It's stone quiet. Everything is closed and people wearing black armbands are huddled on street corners.

Uh, oh. Yep. The King had died. Elvis was dead.

A year later, I went to Germany to study. That was The Year of Three Popes: the pope died; the College of Cardinals elected a second pope; he died 30 days later; they elected a third pope. Three popes in one year. The last time was in the 1370s.

Anyway. I'm at the University of Heidelberg and in the evening, we're watching the College of Cardinals and the events in Rome. A German professor said "This is important. Over 50,000 people have come to Rome."

I said "That ain't nothing. When Elvis died, five million came to Memphis!"

March 22, 2010 at 7:46 pm
Satchmo William TragarsI've lived in Memphis for 60 of my 66 years and I never saw Elvis even once. I did visit Graceland in 2003. It was as tacky and schlocky as everyone told me it was. But still they come. A couple of millennia or so ago Elvis would have been apotheosized, and Memphis would now be a Holy City to rival Mecca. It's all about timing.
March 22, 2010 at 8:15 pm
Dave MundtI visited Graceland quite some number of years ago...and perhaps the most amusing thing I saw was the PDR (Physician's Desk Reference) in the middle of a stack of books on Elvis' desk.
March 22, 2010 at 11:13 pm
Andreas RamosThe PDR? That is so funny! At Graceland, there's that great photo of Elvis with Nixon. Elvis flew up to Washington, met with Nixon, and offered to be a "special agent" for narcotics.

Some of his stuff was so odd. It doesn't make sense at all.

Andreas RamosWhat I really like are the small street corners, the side streets, the things that make up the experience of actually living there. I lived in Paris for about a year. It's a really great town.

Lisa CarlsonYou're pushing me to want to upload a couple of Parisian snaps, myself...How many of us have some? Why don't all of Andreas' friends post their fave Paris shots?

Susanne Skou Kristensensorry, but I don't have pictures of the time I drove an autocamper in a parisian railwaystation, but I can still remember my own laugh and my children being embaresed. The story will live beyond me, and It's getting better and better each time my kids tels it...
